Our camp is nestled where the edge of the forest meets the sea.
‘Laana DaaGang.nga Rediscovery was founded in T'aalan STl'aang Leepas Bay on the North end of Graham Island, Haida Gwaii in the mid 1970’s. It was born in recognition of the importance of connecting Haida youth with their culture by offering an opportunity for them to experience the lands, waters and traditions of their ancestors by way of a remote camp-based youth program.
From its humble beginnings in Haida Gwaii, ‘Laana DaaGang.nga Rediscovery inspired many other indigenous communities across Canada, and internationally, to develop and host their own Rediscovery Camps. In the late 90’s, as the popularity and success of this Program grew, Skidegate Band Council helped establish ‘Laana Daagang.nga Swan Bay Rediscovery Program.
Located on the South end of Burnaby Island, within the boundaries of Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area, and Haida Heritage Site and comprised of three longhouses for accommodation and one large longhouse-style building for cooking and shared common space, the ‘Laana DaaGang.nga Rediscovery site provides the perfect location for our camp programing.
